I am alarmed at the decision of an immigration court judge in Louisiana to deport Mahmoud Khalil, a green card holder and permanent resident of the United States, solely because of his political speech.

Mahmoud was not accused of any crime nor did he do anything that broke any local, state, or federal laws. His anti-genocide speech and protest dissented from state policy, and that is why he is being persecuted and targeted for deportation by the state. This decision is a travesty that demonstrates how the American legal system is weaponized to stamp out advocacy for Palestinian human rights and Palestine. These are the actions of a fascist and authoritarian state; not a democratic government.

Make no mistake, attacks on the First Amendment will not stop with targeting Palestinian advocacy, international students, or permanent residents – tomorrow it will be naturalized citizens and U.S. born citizens for any dissent against state policy.

This is a moment in which those of us with the privilege to step forward have to speak out against this ruling. Those who choose to remain silent in this moment are complicit with the United States devolvement into a fascist state.

I demand that you 1) publicly condemn the unconstitutional and illegal deportation attempt of Mahmoud Khalil, and 2) use your power as an elected official to use every tool at your disposal to prevent this illegal deportation from being carried out and setting a dangerous precedent for us all.
