Justice for Awdah

Israeli settlers have murdered beloved Palestinian human rights defender Awdah Hathaleen, holding his body hostage and refusing to let international or observers or the press into his community. Just one month after the Trump administration denied Awdah entry to San Francisco to share about the extreme Israeli settler and state violence his community routinely faces, he has now been murdered by that very same violence. This status quo is intolerable. We demand our elected officials unequivocally condemn Awdah’s murder and demand the release of his body and take swift and bold action to end the ongoing U.S. aid to Israel that armed Awdah’s killers and continues to fuel the starvation and genocide of Palestinians. I am writing to inform you that Palestinian human rights defender Awdah Hathaleen was murdered by Israeli settlers in occupied Palestine. Awdah was one of the two visitors from Palestine who had flown into San Francisco International Airport in June 2025 for a humanitarian visit to share their stories and experiences of living under Israeli occupation. Awdah was detained by Customs and Border Patrol at SFO, his U.S. visa was cancelled, and he was deported back to Palestine where he was murdered only weeks later. The only reason is because he was Palestinian and because he came here to raise awareness about the plight of the Palestinian people.

As your constituent, I ask that you unequivocally condemn Awdah’s murder, demand the release of his body for burial in his hometown of Umm Al Khair, and insist that Israel re-open the community to internationals and the press.

It is also past time to take every step possible to end the genocide and forced starvation by Israel of the people of Gaza. Our local elected leaders have largely been silent on this issue, and while it was never acceptable, you must demonstrate courage and integrity and speak out now as Gaza is on the brink of stage 5 famine. Your silence on this issue will only embolden anti-Palestinian racism and hate incidents locally.

Additionally, we demand an end to the censorship and attack on Palestine in our schools and workplaces. Awdah’s murder was senseless, horrific, and utterly preventable. It is the story of countless numbers of our brethren. Let us stop this madness before it claims another ten thousand Awdahs.

History will remember you for what you do and say in this moment. Including if you fail to speak up.
